Type Locality and Naming

Named after the village of Karakuz, Babatag Range, valley of the Kafirnigan River. V.N. Shvanov, 1961 (504, p.74). Stratotype at the village of Babatag. Belongs to the Karakuz Horizon (55; 191; 362; 363; 383; 446; 452).

Synonym: Karakuz Suite, Каракузская св.


Lithology and Thickness

At the bottom, gray and brown sandstones, conglomerates, siltstone (aleurolites) with layers of limestones.

At the top - dark gray, green clays with layers of light gray sandstones, shell rocks, and gravelites. Thickness 40-150m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformably overlies the Derbent Fm [But entry for Derbent says it conformably overlies Karkuz; which also fits the ages of each], with erosion on the Aksu Fm and Gelandaryin Fm.

Upper contact

It is overlain [overlies; according to ages] conformably or with erosion by the Mingbatman Fm, with erosion by the Kyzylangur Fm.

Regional extent

Babatag Range, S., Central, and N.-E. Gissar. Correlated with the Kul'kamys Fm and Charsangin Fm.

At the bottom, layers of limestones with ammonites - Acanthohoplites nolani Seun. At the top, with ammonites Hypacanthoplites jacobi Coll., H. aschiltaensis Anth., H. tscharlokensis Glasun.; marine bivalve mollusks - Linotrigonia archiaci Orb., L. Spinosa Park.; ostracods - Dolocythere ex gr. rara Martins., Stravia prosocialis Mand.
